Act Now or Stay Out of the Race in Nanotechnology Applications

Local entrepreneurs must act quickly or risk being marginalized in the emerging market for nanotechnology applications, according to industries leaders addressing the "International Conference on Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials 2007" which opened today (11 December 2007).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr Edward Tsui, Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Machinery & Metal Industries (FMM), said, "Nanotechnology has opened up huge business opportunities and that other countries have already made substantial progress and achieved success in commercializing it. I believe that Hong Kong is poised to be one of the major players. We must move faster to seize these opportunities if we are to stay in the race."

Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony included Mr Eddy Chan, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government; Mr Jimmy Kwok, Honorary Chairman of the FMM; Mr Wilson Fung, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC); Mr Alan Wong, Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC); and Professor K M Ng, Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and Chief Executive Officer of Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI).

Under the theme of "From Discovery to Innovative Products", the three-day Conference is organized by the FMM and co-organized by HKPC, HKTDC, HKUST, and NAMI. Speakers at the conference included nanotechnology experts from Europe, North America, Japan, New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Mainland and Taiwan.
