HKPC Sets Up “Hong Kong Connected Vehicles Cluster”

As automobiles are becoming more intelligent and closely linked, the connected vehicles sector is fast emerging. According to a market research, by 2020 there will be around 150 million connected vehicles in the world with market value estimated at USD 141 billion.

While different nations are developing various connected vehicle technologies and their own industry standards, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced a consultation on drawing up the national industry standards on connected vehicles in June 2017. To meet the needs of industries, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) today (18 September 2017) brings together over 20 enterprises from the automotive and accessories, mobile networks, transportation and infrastructure industries to form the “Hong Kong Connected Vehicles Cluster” (HKCVC) to facilitate exchange among industry practitioners for business development in connected vehicles to tap new business opportunities in this promising sector.

Dr Lawrence Cheung, Director (Technology Development) of HKPC, said, “HKPC and its Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems R&D Centre have rich experience in R&D and extensive industry networks. As the co-ordinator and technical advisor of HKCVC, HKPC will help industry master technical standards of the connected vehicles. In addition, drawing on the joint efforts of vehicle manufacturers, infrastructure providers, software and hardware suppliers, we will develop automotive-grade connected technologies and products for the market.”

In the upcoming three years, HKCVC will focus on four technology areas, namely smart sensor and control, smart mobility, data analytic and security, demonstration and testing. In addition, HKCVC will actively explore strategic partnership with related Mainland and overseas organizations to promote technology innovation and collaboration.

Using a variety of sensors, control and execution systems, together with communication and internet technologies, connected vehicles enable real-time information exchange between vehicles, vehicle and people, vehicle and transportation infrastructure, and vehicle and the Cloud network. By analysing the collected data, connected vehicles can flexibly assist and adjust driving tasks, and ultimately realizes autonomous driving. The connected vehicle is one of the enabling technologies of “Smart Mobility”, a core element in Smart City development.
